ABSTRACT

Since Van Asperen de Boer's findings in the detection of micrometric radiation for inspection of easel painting, Infrared Reflectography has evolved extensively in terms of spatial resolution, digitization, and computational processing.
No less rich has been the search for implementations of various imaging and surveyng techniques in different wavelengths in order to obtain more and more qualitative/quantitative, radiometric/micro-morphometric information about painted surfaces.
This session will focus on traditional and innovative imaging techniques for multi-spectral and micro-morphometric inspection of painted surfaces of Cultural Heritage such as Multi-band IR Reflectography (IRR), False Color Infrared (FCIR), UV-Induced visible Fluorescence (UVF), Visible-induced Infrared Luminescence (VIL), Pulsed Termography (PT), X-ray digital imaging (RX), Terahertz imaging, Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), 3D Micro-profilometry, and 3D Multispectral modelling.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Nicola Ludwig associate Professor of Physics applied to Cultural heritage, environment and medicine at Department of Physics in University of Milano.
Main topics of the research activities are: infrared thermography both applied for diagnosis of ancient buildings and for evapotranspiration rate in plants; multiband infrared reflectography, fiber optics UV-visible-near infrared spectroscopy (FORS) applied in pigment identification and in studies of colorimetric characterization of different materials.
Since the degree in Physics 1991 I’ve published more than 100 paper mostly in the field of application of infrared imaging.

Marco Gargano has a degree in Physics and since 2004 he has been working at the Physics Department of the University of Milan where he deals with the development and application of the main Imaging techniques for Cultural Heritage, such as Multispectral Technical Photography, Digital Radiography and Reflectance Transformation Imaging. He is Professor in charge of the course "Diagnostic Techniques" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and he is author of more than 100 publications on international scientific journals and book chapters. During his activity he has studied several important works of art including paintings, sculptures and archaeological finds of high documentary interest.

Emanuela Grifoni is a Heritage Scientist, her current research activities concern Computational Imaging, with a focus on high-resolution Multispectral 3D Modeling.
She obtained her PhD in Chemical Sciences for Cultural Heritage at the University of Florence and attended advanced training schools on Diagnostic Techniques and Computer Graphics. After having worked in some Italian research centers, she is currently Professor in charge at the Department of Earth Sciences and at the Postgraduate School of Archaeological Heritage of the University of Milan where she teaches the courses of "Restoration".
Her research activity is described in several scientific articles on international journals, book chapters and communications to conferences published on international journals.
